Scott McTominay will undergo a cardiac procedure after Napoli confirmed the Scotland midfielder has been diagnosed with a mild benign arrhythmia, the club announced.

The 29-year-old was withdrawn during Napoli's 2-1 Serie A loss to Como on Sunday. The Italian club say he will receive corrective treatment within the coming days.

According to the NHS, an arrhythmia occurs when the heart beats too quickly, too slowly, or with an irregular rhythm — a condition that may not always be serious. The British Heart Foundation describes the planned procedure, cardiac arrhythmia ablation, as a technique using heat or cold energy to create tiny scars in the heart, blocking faulty electrical signals and restoring a normal heartbeat.

Napoli expect McTominay to return to action after the international break in early October. However, his absence means he is set to miss the first four matches of Sebastien Pocognoli's tenure as Scotland head coach.

Scotland are scheduled to face Slovenia twice — home and away — as well as North Macedonia and Switzerland in the Nations League during this period.
