Messi Breaks World Cup Scoring Record as Argentina Defeat Austria

Lionel Messi has surpassed Miroslav Klose's long-standing record for goals scored at a single FIFA World Cup tournament, netting twice against Austria to push his tally to 18 and cement his place atop the all-time standings.
Messi — competing at his sixth World Cup, a record-equalling appearance in itself — had already drawn level with Klose's mark of 16 goals by completing a hat-trick against Algeria in Argentina's opening group game. Two more against Austria have now moved him two clear of the German legend.
A tale of two halves for Messi
The evening had a difficult opening for Messi: he spurned a penalty inside the first 10 minutes, skewing his effort wide of the right-hand post, and squandered a handful of further opportunities before the breakthrough arrived.
His first goal came in the 39th minute at Arlington — a precise left-footed finish that put Argentina in front. Then, deep into second-half stoppage time, Messi doubled his account after finding Julian Alvarez on the counter-attack. Alvarez's initial shot was blocked, and Messi reacted first to convert the rebound.
The brace takes Messi to five goals in the 2026 World Cup — more than any other player at this tournament.
Argentina through to the round of 32
Argentina, the defending World Cup champions, have sealed their progression to the round of 32 with the win over Austria. The result confirms their place in the knockout stage with one group game still remaining — giving Messi at least one more outing to extend his record further.
Argentina's final Group J fixture is against Jordan on Sunday, 28 June.
