Mexico supporters attempted to disrupt England's preparations ahead of their FIFA World Cup last-16 clash by gathering outside the squad's hotel in Mexico City with music, chanting, and fireworks — but police moved the group back before they could cause any serious disturbance.
Video footage circulating on social media showed fans assembled on a street close to England's hotel, making noise late into the night. Early reports from within the England camp suggest the players were largely unaffected.
Riot police form a protective ring
Officers in riot gear have been stationed on streets immediately surrounding the hotel, turning away anyone who attempts to approach. The heightened security follows a formal complaint lodged by Ecuador with FIFA after their own squad had their sleep disrupted by supporters armed with loudspeakers, motorbikes, and horns during last week's group-stage fixture. Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 in that round-of-32 tie.
FIFA acted on Ecuador's complaint, and the additional security measures now in place appear to be a direct response to that episode.
