Pitso Mosimane has been reinstated as head coach of South Africa's men's national team, Bafana Bafana, more than 13 years after his first stint in the role ended.

The 62-year-old previously managed the side from July 2010 to June 2012. He now steps in to replace Hugo Broos, whose contract expired at the end of July after five years at the helm.

Broos leaves a solid foundation

During Broos's tenure, the Belgian guided Bafana Bafana to a third-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and the last 32 of this year's FIFA World Cup — South Africa's first appearance at the finals since hosting the tournament in 2010.

A new deal confirmed

The South Africa Football Association's executive committee approved Mosimane's reappointment on 8 August. However, he was officially unveiled to the media in Johannesburg on Tuesday, following the finalisation of his contract and technical staff. The length of the deal has not been disclosed.

A difficult first chapter

Mosimane's original tenure ended under a cloud. Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations after erroneously believing a draw in their final qualifying match against Sierra Leone would secure their place at the tournament. He then departed in June 2012, following a 1-1 home draw against Ethiopia in their opening qualifier for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Club glory between stints

In the years since leaving the national team, Mosimane built an impressive coaching record at club level. He led Mamelodi Sundowns and Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly to three CAF Champions League titles combined, establishing himself among the continent's most successful club coaches.

More recently, he took on management roles in Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, and Iran before accepting the call to return to international football with South Africa.
