Most of Morocco's World Cup Squad Were Born Outside Morocco — Including Two Key Stars

4 days ago·2 min

Morocco have emerged as African football's most compelling force in recent years, reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup and clinching the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2025. Now, manager Mohamed Ouahbi's side have turned heads once again at the FIFA World Cup 2026, with an impressive opening performance against Brazil.

But beyond the football, one striking detail about the Atlas Lions deserves attention: of the 26-man squad assembled for this summer's tournament, only seven players were actually born in Morocco.

The seven born on home soil

The players born in Morocco are Ahmed Reda Tagnaouti, Marwane Saâdane, Youssef Belammari, Azzedine Ounahi, Soufiane Rahimi, Amine Sbaï, and Ayoub El Kaabi.

Spain's significant contribution

Six members of the squad were born in Spain — including captain Achraf Hakimi and Real Madrid forward Brahim Diaz, who scored against Brazil. Ismael Saibari and defender Chadi Riad also count Spain as their birthplace.

France, the Netherlands, and Belgium

Given the deep historical ties between France and North Africa, it is little surprise that six Moroccan squad members were born in France, among them Issa Diop, Ayyoub Bouaddi, and Gessime Yassine.

The Netherlands contributed three players to Morocco's roster: Sofyan Amrabat, Anass Salah-Eddine, and Manchester United full-back Noussair Mazraoui were all born there. Exciting wingers Bilal El Khannouss and Chemsdine Talbi, along with Zakaria El Ouahdi, were born in Belgium.

A Canadian goalkeeper and a Brussels-born manager

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou adds yet another layer to this story — he was born in Montreal, Canada, and moved to Morocco at age 3. Even more striking, head coach Ouahbi was himself born in Brussels. Despite Moroccan heritage, his family backed Belgium during his upbringing, and his early coaching career began with Maccabi Brussels and Anderlecht.

Morocco's ability to draw from its vast diaspora across Europe and beyond has clearly become one of its greatest strengths — and the Atlas Lions are showing the world just how effective that model can be.
