Neto's Brace Sinks Everton as Chelsea Claim First Clean Sheet of the Season

1 hour ago·3 min

Pedro Neto delivered a match-winning performance at Goodison Park on Saturday, netting twice in the second half as Chelsea defeated Everton to end the hosts' unbeaten run and record their first clean sheet of the season.

The Portugal winger struck just 43 seconds after the restart to break the deadlock, then sealed the points in the 90th minute after a blocked free-kick fell to him inside the box. His two-goal haul earned him the standout rating of the afternoon.

Neto the difference-maker

Neto had already hinted at his intentions before the interval, threatening with a long-range effort shortly before half-time. His composure after the break was clinical — he latched onto Jorrel Hato's assist for the opener and showed sharp instincts to convert the rebound for his second.

Hato, Chelsea's sole change from the previous week's victory, was composed throughout and claimed the assist for the opening goal. Moises Caicedo relished the physical midfield contest and came agonisingly close to scoring himself, rattling the crossbar with a superb first-time volley just before the break.

Maxence Lacroix delivered one of his strongest outings since arriving at the club, seeing a corner header cleared off the line and defending with authority. Jordan Henderson was influential across all areas of the pitch, with his set-piece delivery a consistent threat.

Cole Palmer had a quieter afternoon by his usual standards, though he remained dangerous in possession whenever given space. Morgan Rogers showed his competitive nature throughout, and his clever backheel contributed to the build-up for Chelsea's opening goal.

Joao Pedro endured a rare off day — the Brazilian, who had been in fine form heading into the match, missed a good opportunity to make the result safe in the 86th minute.

There was also a worrying moment when Emiliano Martinez was carried off on a stretcher following a collision with Jarrad Branthwaite, bringing on young Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders for his Premier League debut. Penders impressed with a punch from a cross in the 84th minute, though he looked less assured with the next ball before completing a straightforward save.

A frustrating afternoon for Everton

For Everton, Harrison Armstrong was the most energetic performer, raising the home crowd with a fierce early challenge and later clearing an effort off the goal line. Merlin Rohl, named in a surprise starting role, defended diligently and also registered the hosts' first shot, as well as producing an important block to deny Rogers.

Vitali Mykolenko returned from absence and delivered an excellent cross that created a late first-half opportunity for Thierno Barry. The French striker, however, struggled to make his chances count — he should have done more with a first-half header and later fired directly at the goalkeeper.

Jack Grealish grew into the game and set up Everton's clearest chance with an inswinging cross for Barry, but the hosts could not find a way through a well-organised Chelsea defence.

Christian Norgaard, introduced in the 85th minute on his Premier League debut for Everton, had an uncomfortable cameo — giving the ball away immediately and earning a booking for a foul on Palmer.
