Ngumoha Shines as Liverpool Stage Stunning Champions League Comeback Against Villarreal

Rio Ngumoha did not get his name on the scoresheet, but Tuesday night at Anfield belonged to him. The 18-year-old was the standout performer as Liverpool came from two goals down to beat Villarreal 4-3 in the UEFA Champions League, earning the UEFA player of the match award for a display of raw, fearless brilliance.
A performance for the ages
Liverpool were sluggish and disjointed through much of the first half, trailing by two goals with little sign of life — until Ngumoha took matters into his own hands. After Alexis Mac Allister pulled one back, Ngumoha carved open space to deliver a delicate, dinking ball that Ronald Araujo met to restore parity.
Following the interval, he waltzed past Sergi Cardona to tee up Mac Allister once more, handing Liverpool the lead for the first time in the match. By the time Ngumoha was withdrawn in the 74th minute — replaced by Bradley Barcola — chants of "Rio, Rio, Rio" had already echoed around Anfield multiple times.
Goalkeeper Alisson embraced the teenager warmly as the crowd's appreciation washed over the stadium. "It's up there with one of the best games I've played," Ngumoha told Amazon Prime. "Whenever I get the ball and there's an opportunity to go one versus one, or two versus one, I believe in myself to do it. I'll just keep going and be ruthless."
The numbers behind the magic
The statistics underlined what the eye already knew. Ngumoha recorded 12 touches inside the opposition box, completed seven of eight attempted dribbles, and contributed two decisive assists. Yet the figures only tell part of the story — his ability to carry the ball directly at defenders and manufacture moments from nothing gave Liverpool a dimension they otherwise lacked.
Former Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge, speaking on Amazon Prime, was effusive in his praise. "He was magnificent tonight. On the ball, this kid has so much potential — and I say 'kid', but he's a young man. He has so much quality and it's stuff that you can't teach. What he does with the ball at his feet — that is God-given ability."
Growing into the right flank
Ngumoha has come through the ranks as a left-sided player, but competition from Cody Gakpo and Barcola has limited his opportunities on that flank this season. Head coach Andoni Iraola has pushed his wingers to be comfortable on either side, and Ngumoha's adaptation to the right has been swift and impressive.
"I feel like I've got a lot better playing there from the Newcastle game until now," Ngumoha said after Liverpool's recent win over Brentford. "I'm understanding it more. And going away with England helped a lot as well. I like playing on both sides. It gives me another tool in the toolbox."
Contract talks and what comes next
Iraola praised Ngumoha's attitude and his growing physical capacity, while urging perspective. "He has played a lot on the right lately and is feeling so comfortable now, but he is only 18 and still not the full package," the head coach said. "There will be ups and downs in the process, but attitude-wise I think he's in a great place."
Ngumoha is currently contracted to Liverpool until 2028 — a deal signed in September 2025, weeks after his 17th birthday. Negotiations over improved terms are ongoing, with the player indicating at the weekend that talks are progressing well and are being handled by his agent. For now, he is content to let his football make the argument — and on Tuesday night against Villarreal, that argument was impossible to ignore.
