Nwabali Returns to Chippa United After Months Out of Action

1 hour ago·2 min

Stanley Nwabali has completed his return to Chippa United, with the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) club officially confirming the re-signing of the Nigeria Super Eagles goalkeeper as they prepare for the 2026/27 season under coach Brandon Truter.

In a statement, the club said:

"Chippa United Football Club is delighted to welcome Stanley Nwabali back to the Chilli Boys. After taking time away, Stanley Nwabali returns to the Eastern Cape, and we are pleased to welcome him back to the club."

A surprise departure followed by a difficult spell

Nwabali's exit from Chippa United earlier this year raised eyebrows, coming on the heels of a standout Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco, where his performances in goal helped the Super Eagles claim bronze after defeating Egypt in a penalty shootout.

Following his departure, Nwabali struggled to secure a new club and spent months without competitive football. The extended absence cost him a place in the squad for the 2026 Unity Cup in May, as well as double-header friendly fixtures against Poland and Portugal.

Msibi's impressive season now under threat

During Nwabali's absence, goalkeeper Dumisani Msibi stepped up as first choice between the posts, delivering a sequence of strong performances that proved decisive in Chippa United avoiding relegation. Msibi ended the campaign in fine form — keeping five clean sheets and earning the captaincy, form that placed him in contention for a Bafana Bafana call-up.

With Nwabali now back at the club, Msibi's position as first-choice goalkeeper looks set to face renewed competition.

Transfers affected by the return

According to iDiski Times, the confirmation of Nwabali's return has also had knock-on effects for Chippa United's recruitment plans. The club are reportedly no longer pursuing former Polokwane City goalkeeper Brian Bwire or defender Bongani Sam, reversing earlier moves to bring them in.

A career built across Nigerian football

Nwabali began his professional career in 2018 at Go Round, a club based in Omoku, Rivers State. He subsequently moved to Enyimba in 2020, before spells at Lobi Stars and Katsina United preceded his first stint at Chippa United in 2022.
