Celtic manager Martin O'Neill has revealed that a disagreement over wages was the key reason the Scottish Premiership champions failed to re-sign Kelechi Iheanacho, who has since joined Turkish second-tier side Bursaspor.
Iheanacho had spent the previous season at Parkhead, where he left a lasting impression as an impact substitute despite spending long stretches of the campaign sidelined by injury. Celtic held a one-year extension option in his contract but allowed it to lapse without activating it.
Wages the sticking point
O'Neill acknowledged that Iheanacho's reported wage demands of up to £50,000 a week made a renewal impossible. The Celtic boss had believed an agreement was close before talks broke down.
