Ochoa Makes World Cup History as Mexico Seal Perfect Group Stage

Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa made World Cup history with a record sixth appearance in the tournament as Mexico rounded off a flawless Group A campaign by defeating Czech Republic 3-0 at the Azteca Stadium on Thursday.
Second-half strikes from Mateo Chávez, Julian Quiñones, and Álvaro Fidalgo Fernández sealed a third consecutive victory for the co-hosts, who had already qualified as group winners following earlier wins over South Africa and South Korea.
A night of records in Mexico City
Ochoa, 40, entered the pitch as a substitute to a thunderous ovation in the 78th minute, joining Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the only players to feature at six World Cups. His long clearance upfield directly contributed to Fidalgo Fernández's stoppage-time third goal.
At the other end of the age spectrum, 17-year-old Gilberto Mora etched his own name in the record books. At 17 years and 101 days old, Mora became the youngest player to start a World Cup match since Nigeria's Femi Opabunmi faced England at the 2002 tournament. The teenager played a pivotal role in the second goal, threading a through-ball that released Jorge Sanchez in the build-up before being substituted in the 72nd minute to a standing ovation from the Mexico faithful.
Mexico's clinical second half
The opening 45 minutes were largely uneventful, with Mexico's best opportunity — an Alvarado effort that sailed over the bar — coming and going without reward. Czech Republic offered little, managing only one shot on target across the entire match.
Chávez broke the deadlock in the 55th minute with a composed finish, and Quiñones doubled the advantage six minutes later. Fidalgo Fernández added gloss to the scoreline deep into stoppage time, capping an evening of pure celebration for the home side.
Czech Republic's evening was further darkened by what appeared to be a serious knee injury suffered by West Ham's Tomáš Souček, who was helped from the field after jarring the joint.
Mexico eye knockout stage
Mexico advance to the knockout rounds as Group A winners and could potentially face England in the round of 16. The Azteca Stadium — packed with 80,824 supporters — was a sea of green as the co-hosts signed off their group duties in style.
