Ochoa Named in Mexico Squad for Record Sixth World Cup

Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has been included in Mexico's 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup, making history as one of just three players — alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo — ever selected for a sixth World Cup.
The 40-year-old, who made his World Cup debut at Germany 2006 and spent last season with Cypriot club AEL Limassol, has seen limited playing time for El Tri in recent years. Nevertheless, coach Javier Aguirre has retained his faith in the experienced shot-stopper.
Alvarez leads the side
Edson Alvarez will captain the squad, having spent last season on loan at Fenerbahce from West Ham. Fulham striker Raul Jimenez is also included, as is Santiago Gimenez, who played last season at AC Milan.
At 17 years old, Gilberto Mora is set to become the youngest player to ever represent Mexico at a World Cup. The Tijuana midfielder is joined by 23-year-old forward Armando Gonzalez as one of the fresher faces in the group.
A squad with global roots
The selection reflects Mexico's increasingly international recruitment. US-developed duo Obed Vargas, who plays for Atletico Madrid, and Brian Gutierrez are both part of the setup. Aguirre has also called upon Spain-born midfielder Alvaro Fidalgo of Real Betis and Colombia-born forward Julian Quinones — naturalised players who have established themselves as regulars in the national team.
This marks Aguirre's third stint leading Mexico at a World Cup, following appearances in 2002 and 2010.
Mexico's group stage schedule
Mexico are co-hosting the tournament alongside the United States and Canada. They face Serbia in a warm-up match on Thursday before beginning their World Cup campaign against South Africa at Mexico City's Estadio Azteca on 11 June. They then take on South Korea in Zapopan on 18 June, and close the group stage against the Czech Republic at Estadio Azteca on 24 June.
