Okon Is the New Taribo West, Says Ex-Super Eagle Udeze

1 hour ago·2 min

Former Super Eagles defender Ifeanyi Udeze has drawn a striking comparison between South Africa's standout centre-back Ime Okon and Nigerian football legend Taribo West, saying the young defender carries the same imposing class that made West one of Africa's greatest.

High praise from a former international

Speaking on Sporty TV's FIFA World Cup 2026 coverage, Udeze was effusive about Okon, who is of Nigerian descent and represents Bafana Bafana on the global stage. The comments came after Okon delivered an authoritative display in South Africa's 1-1 draw against Czechia in their second Group B match on Thursday.

"He's a very good player; I'm happy with him," Udeze said. "He has become a key player for Bafana Bafana. He defends very well. Whenever he plays, he is never under pressure."

Udeze was especially taken by the defender's calmness in possession and his ability to move the ball forward with precision.

"Very composed — the way he holds the ball and the way he distributes the ball is class to watch. When I watch him play, I see another Taribo West. Very strong, very agile. He's very intelligent; he can play from the back and link up with the attack."

A rising force at club and international level

Okon has established himself as one of the more impressive young centre-backs in the 2. Bundesliga, where he lines up for Hannover 96. Coaches and observers have consistently highlighted his composure under pressure, high passing accuracy, and the speed with which he has adapted to the physical demands of European football.

At the FIFA World Cup 2026, he has carried that form onto a far bigger stage — cementing his place in South Africa's backline and earning comparisons to one of Nigeria's most decorated defenders in the process.
