Okoye Earns High Praise After Brilliant Display in Nigeria's Loss to Portugal

last week·1 min

Former Nigerian international Dimeji Lawal has heaped praise on Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye following his standout display in Nigeria's 2-1 defeat to Portugal in an international friendly played on Wednesday.

The match took place at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria, where Okoye produced a series of vital saves against a star-studded Portuguese side — even as his team fell to a narrow loss.

Okoye's excellent display

Portugal broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when Pedro Neto converted Diogo Dalot's cutback from the byline, guiding a fine left-footed finish into the bottom-right corner.

Okoye then produced a stunning stop at the near post, tipping Bruno Fernandes' stinging volley over the crossbar to keep Nigeria in the game.

Akor Adams pulled the Super Eagles level eight minutes before half-time, showing composure to beat his defender before finding the far corner.

However, Francisco Conceição's goal in the 75th minute proved decisive, handing Portugal the win despite Nigeria's spirited showing.

Lawal's verdict on Okoye

Speaking to Completesports.com after the final whistle, Lawal was unequivocal in his assessment of the Udinese goalkeeper's performance.
