More than 82,000 Argentina supporters have signed a Change.org petition demanding that FIFA replay the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, which Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in extra time at New Jersey on Sunday.

The petition, authored by Gisela Sanchez, accuses Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic of a "corrupt" performance and calls on FIFA to overturn the result. "The recent final between Argentina and Spain was tarnished by the controversial and corrupt performance of the referee who, according to video evidence, was bought to influence the match's outcome," Sanchez writes.

"If we allow corruption to go unnoticed on this global stage, we are setting a bad example for future generations of athletes and fans. Therefore, we ask FIFA to review these incidents with seriousness and transparency, and to consider replaying the final — this time without the influence of a corrupt referee."

How the final unfolded

Defending champions Argentina failed to register a single shot on target during regulation time and were reduced to 10 men when Enzo Fernández received a red card in the 93rd minute — collecting two yellow cards in the second half, one for dissent and another for a reckless challenge on Pau Cubarsi.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was kept busy throughout, and Spain finally broke through when Ferran Torres struck in the 106th minute to seal the title for the dominant Spanish side.

Vincic blew his whistle 46 times for infractions during the match, 25 of which were awarded against Argentina players. FIFA are now examining the conduct of Argentina's players following the game.

Post-match confrontations

Ugly scenes erupted at the final whistle. Leandro Paredes was seen kicking and punching as he pushed Eric Garcia to the ground and clashed with Gavi, while Nahuel Molina appeared to have sparked the confrontation by throwing a punch at Rodri.

Commentating on ITV, Gary Neville offered a blunt verdict: "It's a disgrace. I love the competitiveness of the Argentines, fighting and scrapping for their lives, Messi has propped them up, but it's been a disgrace the last few games."

Competing petitions

Not all online sentiment runs in Argentina's favour. Separate petitions on Change.org calling for Argentina's exclusion from all future World Cups drew over 29 million signatures before being closed — a stark measure of how divisive Argentina's tournament conduct proved on the global stage.
