Côte d'Ivoire wrote a new page in their football history on Thursday night, advancing to the knockout round of the FIFA World Cup for the first time ever after Nicolas Pépé scored twice in a commanding 2-0 victory over Curaçao in Philadelphia.
The result confirmed the Elephants as runners-up in Group E and booked their place in the round of 32, where they will meet the runners-up from Group I in Dallas on 30 June.
Pépé gives Elephants dream start
Emerse Faé made four changes from the side beaten 2-1 by Germany, and the refreshed lineup responded immediately. In the 7th minute, Yan Diomandé picked up a loose ball at the edge of the area, drove forward, and rolled a low cross through the box. Pépé arrived at precisely the right moment, tapping in from close range to give Côte d'Ivoire their fastest-ever World Cup goal.
The early strike knocked the wind out of Curaçao, who had arrived in Philadelphia with genuine attacking threats — Tahith Chong, Jürgen Locadia, and the Bacuna brothers among the players capable of causing damage. Instead, the Elephants dictated the tempo, patient and disciplined in their approach.
Curaçao threaten but Ivorian resolve holds
Côte d'Ivoire were not entirely comfortable in the opening 45 minutes. Chong rattled a powerful effort just over the crossbar, while captain Leandro Bacuna beat two defenders near the box only to drag his shot wide. Then, moments before half-time, a corner routine almost brought an equaliser — Sherel Floranus Gaari's effort was cleared off the line by Ange-Yoan Bonny in a vital intervention that kept the Elephants' lead intact.
Amad Diallo was lively at the other end, probing repeatedly in the 10th, 18th, and 23rd minutes, though none of his attempts forced goalkeeper Eloy Room into a meaningful save.
Sangaré and Pépé seal it in the second half
The match lost some of its flow after the interval, disrupted by the Philadelphia heat and persistent fouling. But Côte d'Ivoire remained the more dangerous side, and in the 64th minute, the contest was effectively settled. Ibrahim Sangaré threaded a precise pass to Pépé on the right, and the forward cut inside onto his left foot before curling a magnificent finish into the far corner — a goal worthy of the historic night.
Goalkeeper Yahia Fofana stayed alert to deny Chong in the 74th minute as Curaçao pressed for a way back, but Faé's side managed the closing stages with calm intelligence. Elye Wahi, introduced late in place of Pépé, came close to adding a third in the 89th minute, though the Elephants had no need for further gloss.
A new chapter for Ivorian football
The significance of the victory reaches well beyond one result. Previous Ivorian generations — built around icons such as Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré — exited at the group stage in 2006, 2010, and 2014. This generation has cleared that barrier at last.
Faé's team showed resilience throughout the group stage: beating Ecuador, pushing Germany close in a 2-1 defeat, then handling the pressure of a must-win finale against Curaçao. For African football, Côte d'Ivoire's progression is a powerful statement at the expanded 2026 World Cup — and the knockout rounds now await the Elephants.
