Penders Own Goal and Palmer Red Card Hand Spurs Rare Stamford Bridge Win

Chelsea suffered a damaging 2-0 home defeat to Tottenham on a night of high drama at Stamford Bridge — a result that handed Spurs only their second win at the ground in 42 visits.
Goalkeeper Mike Penders, making his first Premier League start in place of the injured Emiliano Martinez, endured a torrid evening. The 21-year-old punched a corner into his own net to gift Tottenham the lead, then conceded again when Mathys Tel's 87th-minute strike beat him at the near post.
Cole Palmer compounded Chelsea's misery by receiving a red card after a sequence of ill-discipline that lasted nine minutes: first booked for pushing Bruno Fernandes, then dismissed for a late tackle on Conor Gallagher.
Caicedo shines in a difficult night for Chelsea
Despite the result, Moises Caicedo was Chelsea's standout performer, constantly disrupting Tottenham's rhythm and winning possession throughout the contest. His battles with James Maddison — who was forced off with injury in the 51st minute — were a highlight of a competitive first half.
Pedro Neto also impressed, combining defensive diligence with an attacking threat, seeing a well-struck effort saved in the second half. Morgan Rogers and Palmer contributed before the latter's dismissal, but Chelsea lacked a decisive touch in the final third.
Tel seals it with a wondergoal
Mathys Tel, introduced as a substitute, marked his first Premier League goal of the season with a spectacular dribble and composed finish that ended any hope of a Chelsea comeback. His goal capped a controlled away performance from Spurs, who were well-organised throughout.
Jan-Paul van Hecke was composed in defence for the visitors, putting pressure on Penders for the own goal, while Mateus Fernandes — whose corner led directly to the opener — and Andy Robertson, on his 300th Premier League start, both contributed effectively at either end.
Tottenham's Mohammed Kudus and Omar Marmoush were less influential — Kudus curling one effort wide, Marmoush mis-kicking a gilt-edged chance in the 29th minute — but Tel's late intervention ensured Spurs departed Stamford Bridge with all three points.
