Petro Atlético overturned a two-goal first-leg deficit to advance to the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2026/27 Group Stage, defeating Zimbabwe's Scottland FC 3-0 at home on Friday to win 3-2 on aggregate.

The Angolan club had been left with a mountain to climb after losing the opening leg in Zimbabwe 2-0, with Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona — both former Zimbabwe internationals — scoring to put Scottland in a commanding position.

Ruben sets the tone early

Petro wasted little time in launching their comeback, with Ruben breaking the deadlock in the 18th minute to reduce the aggregate deficit and inject belief into the home side.

Despite the early goal, Scottland preserved their overall advantage heading into the break, keeping their hopes of a historic qualification alive through the first half.

Pereira and Aparício seal the turnaround

The decisive shift came in the second half. Jorge Pereira struck in the 67th minute to level the aggregate score at 2-2, transforming the tie into a tense, all-or-nothing finale.

With the contest delicately balanced, Pedro Aparício delivered the decisive blow in the 85th minute, putting Petro ahead on aggregate for the first time in the tie and completing a remarkable comeback.

Scottland could not find a response in the closing minutes, and Petro confirmed their place among Africa's final 16 clubs when the final whistle sounded.

A difficult road rewarded

The result is one of the most dramatic reversals of the Second Preliminary Round. Petro had entered the return leg carrying the weight of one of the round's most surprising defeats, yet produced a composed and determined performance to come through.

For Scottland, the exit is a bitter one. Their first-leg display had raised genuine hopes of eliminating one of the continent's more established clubs, only for Petro to deny them at the last.

Petro Atlético now advance to the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2026/27 Group Stage, which is scheduled to begin at the end of November.
