Pico Lopes: Cape Verde's Dublin-Born Defender on World Cup Dreams and Stunning Spain

2 days ago·2 min

Pico Lopes had never imagined that a LinkedIn message, initially dismissed as spam, would lead him to one of the most extraordinary moments in Cape Verde's footballing history. The Shamrock Rovers centre-back, born and raised in Dublin, helped Cape Verde hold European champions Spain to a 0-0 draw in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H opener in Atlanta on June 15 — a result many are already calling one of the greatest upsets the tournament has ever seen.

Lopes, 33, delivered a commanding performance, none more telling than an 88th-minute block that preserved the clean sheet. Uruguay and Saudi Arabia now stand between Cape Verde and a potential place in the knockout rounds.

From Dublin to Cape Verde — a diaspora story

Lopes's path to international football is as unlikely as it is compelling. His father left Cape Verde at 16, worked in cafes and bakeries across Portugal, the Netherlands, and Belgium, before an Irish Ferries captain convinced him to spend a weekend in Ireland. He never left.

Lopes grew up in Dublin, played his early football with Bohemians, and was even capped by the Republic of Ireland Under-19s. A career playing for the senior Ireland side seemed improbable, however, and Lopes spent a period working in a bank before going full-time with Shamrock Rovers.

Then came the LinkedIn message. Cape Verde's manager had reached out in Portuguese — Lopes, thinking it was spam, ignored it for nine months. When a follow-up message arrived in English, he finally ran it through Google Translate. Three weeks later, he was in Marseille, lining up for Cape Verde against Togo.
