Qatar Face Switzerland in World Cup 2026 Group B Opener

5 days ago·2 min

Qatar and Switzerland meet in California on Saturday, June 13, in what promises to be one of the more intriguing Group B clashes of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00pm BST / 3:00pm ET.

Qatar's uphill battle

Qatar are appearing at only their second FIFA World Cup — having debuted as hosts in 2022 — and manager Julen Lopetegui, the former Spain boss, faces a stern test from the outset. The Maroons were eliminated at the group stage four years ago, and a difficult pre-tournament run — including a 1-1 draw with El Salvador in their final warm-up match on June 6 — has done little to raise expectations.

Yet there is genuine motivation for Qatar to perform. Group B also contains Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina, meaning the group is wide open. A win here would give the Maroons their best-ever chance of reaching the knockout rounds of a FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history.

Going forward, Akram Afif, Yusuf Abdurisag, and Edmilson Junior are expected to form a front three. Afif is the danger man, having netted 39 goals for his country.

Switzerland's experience and ambition

Switzerland arrive in California under manager Murat Yakin with a fresh-looking squad, having moved on from some experienced names while still retaining quality throughout. The Swiss have reached the Round of 16 in three consecutive major tournaments — 2012, 2016, and 2022 — and have not been knocked out in the group stage since 2010.

Their best-ever FIFA World Cup showings date back to 1934, 1938, and 1954, when they reached the quarter-finals. There is pressure on this generation to go at least as deep. Confidence should not be lacking, either: Switzerland beat Jordan 4-1 in late May before drawing 1-1 with Australia in their final pre-tournament friendly.

Manuel Akanji, Ricardo Rodriguez, and Granit Xhaka are expected to provide the backbone of experience in the XI, with Remo Freuler set for a midfield role.

How to watch

The match is free to stream in several territories. UK viewers can watch on ITV1 or stream via ITVX. In Australia, every game of the FIFA World Cup 2026 is free on SBS On Demand, with an account and valid Australian postcode required. Irish fans can follow the action on RTÉ Player, while US viewers can access the game on Fox, including through streaming platforms Fox One, YouTube TV, Hulu+Live TV, Fubo, Sling, and DirecTV. Swiss audiences can tune in via SRF, RTS, or RSI.

FourFourTwo's prediction: Qatar 0-2 Switzerland — the Swiss are expected to have too much quality for their Asian counterparts.
