Portugal winger Rafael Leão has completed a move to Galatasaray, where he will link up with Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen in what shapes up as one of the most exciting attacking partnerships in the Turkish Süper Lig.

Galatasaray confirmed the arrival by sharing a short video on X of the 25-year-old — who is actually 27 — seated on a plane and delivering a message directly to the club's supporters. Reports indicate he is set to sign a four-year contract with the Istanbul side.

Aston Villa had also reportedly shown interest in the forward before Galatasaray won the race for his signature, bringing him in from Serie A giants AC Milan.

From Sporting CP to the top of European football

Leão, the son of an Angolan father and a São Toméan mother, came through the youth academy at Sporting CP, making his first-team debut in 2018 and winning the 2017–18 Taça da Liga. His time in Lisbon ended abruptly after he unilaterally terminated his contract following a violent attack by ultras fans inside the club's facilities.

He subsequently joined Ligue 1 club Lille on a free transfer, spending one season in France before AC Milan signed him in 2019. At Milan, Leão helped the club claim the 2021–22 Serie A title and was named that season's Most Valuable Player — an award that cemented his standing among Europe's elite forwards.

International honours with Portugal

On the international stage, Leão has built an impressive record. He was part of the Portugal under-17 squad that won the 2016 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, coming on as a substitute in the 79th minute of the final against Spain — a match Portugal won 5–4 on penalties after a 1–1 draw following extra time.

He earned his senior Portugal debut on 9 October 2021, entering at half-time in place of Cristiano Ronaldo and providing the assist for André Silva's goal in a 3–0 friendly victory over Qatar — an immediate impact on the biggest stage.

Leão went on to represent Portugal at both the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups. Most recently, he was part of the squad that claimed the 2025 UEFA Nations League title, with Portugal defeating Spain 5–3 in a penalty shootout in the final.

Now reunited with familiar faces in Istanbul, Leão's arrival alongside Osimhen gives Galatasaray a striking force capable of troubling any defence in Europe.
