Rangers in Talks With RB Salzburg Over Head Coach Danny Röhl

4 hours ago·2 min

Rangers are in discussions with Red Bull Salzburg over a potential move for head coach Danny Röhl, with the Austrian Bundesliga club understood to be pursuing the 37-year-old as a replacement for Daniel Beichler.

Sky Sports News understands that any agreement would need to satisfy Rangers' compensation demands. Röhl, who has two years remaining on his contract at Ibrox, only arrived at the club last October.

A swift rise, then a close-run title race

Röhl took charge from Russell Martin, inheriting a side sitting sixth in the Scottish Premiership. He steered Rangers into contention for the title before their challenge faded in the closing stages of the campaign, with the club ultimately finishing third.

Despite that outcome, Röhl had publicly expressed enthusiasm for the season ahead and spoken about the lessons drawn from his first seven months in Glasgow. He had also been given assurances about his future at the club — yet Ibrox leadership has been weighing its options since May.

Summer rebuild already under way

Rangers have pushed ahead with a wide-ranging summer overhaul, with new CEO Jim Gillespie, executive director Fraser Thornton, technical director Dan Purdy, and consultant Stig Inge Bjørnebye all involved in reshaping the squad alongside the coaching staff.

Scotland international Lawrence Shankland became the first confirmed arrival of the window, signing from Hearts on a two-year deal with an option for a further 12 months. A release clause in his contract allowed Shankland to leave Tynecastle at no cost, having netted 20 goals across all competitions last season.

Röhl's path to Ibrox

Röhl built his coaching foundations at RB Leipzig, where he worked as an assistant before following Ralph Hasenhüttl to Southampton in 2018. He then joined Hansi Flick's backroom staff at Bayern Munich in 2019, where he was part of the team that claimed the Bundesliga title.

His first managerial role arrived in October 2023 at Sheffield Wednesday, where he kept the club in the Championship after inheriting a squad that had collected just two points from their opening 10 matches. He steadied the ship to finish 12th the following season before departing for Ibrox last October.

At Rangers, he guided the club to third place in the Scottish Premiership. They exited the Scottish Cup at the quarter-final stage and were eliminated from the League Cup at the semi-final stage.
