Rangers have wrapped up the signing of South African centre-back Olwethu Makhanya in a deal worth approximately £3m, bringing the 22-year-old to Ibrox on a four-year contract from MLS club Philadelphia Union.

The Scottish Premiership side hold the option to extend Makhanya's deal by a further 12 months, giving them long-term security over one of South Africa's most promising young defenders.

Makhanya becomes Rangers' eighth summer acquisition, arriving with considerable MLS experience behind him — he made 53 appearances for Philadelphia Union before securing his move to Scotland.

Sky Sports News had reported earlier this month that the South Africa international had attracted significant interest from Ibrox officials, and the club have now moved swiftly to complete the transfer.

Rangers open their Scottish Premiership season on Friday with an away fixture at Dundee United, live on Sky Sports.
