Rangers Petition CAF Over MC Alger Supporter Violence at Abeokuta
Enugu Rangers have formally lodged a petition with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following an alleged outbreak of violence and disorder by MC Alger supporters during and after the clubs' CAF Champions League second preliminary round first-leg match at the Moshood Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta on Sunday.
The Flying Antelopes won the contest 2-0, with Kenneth Igboke and James Emo both finding the net late in the game to hand the Nigerian champions a commanding lead ahead of the return leg.
What Rangers allege
In the petition, addressed to CAF's Interclubs Competitions Organising Committee and Disciplinary Board, Rangers accused MC Alger's travelling supporters of forcing open a stadium entrance gate to enter without tickets, bypassing official procedures, and vandalising seats inside the ground after the final whistle.
The club described the incidents as serious threats to spectator safety, stadium security, and the protection of football infrastructure during continental competition — concerns they say CAF must address before the decisive second leg.
Rangers demand closed-doors return leg
Rangers have asked CAF to order that the return fixture, scheduled for October 23 in Algiers, be played behind closed doors. The club also urged the continental governing body to compel MC Alger to provide adequate security guarantees for the visiting delegation and to enforce strict crowd-control measures on the night.
Manager Fidelis Ilechukwu's side will travel to Algeria looking to protect their two-goal cushion and confirm qualification for the lucrative group stage of the CAF Champions League.
