Real Madrid Eye Riccardo Calafiori in Potential Arsenal Blow

Arsenal could face an unwanted summer dilemma over defender Riccardo Calafiori, with Real Madrid reported to have made enquiries about the Italian international.
The 23-year-old has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League this season, contributing goals and assists from a defensive position while anchoring what many consider the finest back four in European football. He was part of the Arsenal defence that kept a clean sheet in their historic 1-0 victory at Anfield — their first win at the ground in 14 years — which moved the Gunners to the top of the Premier League table.
Real Madrid's interest
According to a report by TEAMtalk, Real Madrid have made enquiries about Calafiori and manager Jose Mourinho considers him a "dream" signing. Mourinho worked with the defender on nine occasions during his tenure at Roma, and his versatility — capable of playing at left-back and centrally — is said to have left a lasting impression.
Real Madrid signed Marc Cucurella over the summer to address their left-back options, but Calafiori's ability to fill multiple roles across the backline has kept Los Blancos attentive.
Contract and injury concerns
Calafiori's current deal at Arsenal runs until 2029, but with two years remaining after next summer, the club may find themselves at a crossroads if extension talks stall. FourFourTwo reports that Arsenal intend to open negotiations over new contracts for Calafiori alongside Martin Odegaard, Jurrien Timber, and Declan Rice.
However, a persistent injury record complicates the picture. Since arriving in England from Bologna in 2024, Calafiori has sustained eight separate injuries, missing 13 matches across all competitions in the second half of last season alone. He was notably absent for the Champions League final, with Piero Hincapie starting in his place.
The Rome-born defender overcame a potentially career-ending knee injury as a teenager, rebuilding through a spell in Switzerland before emerging as one of Europe's most promising defenders at Bologna. Transfermarkt currently values him at €65 million.
Arsenal's calculation
Arsenal are aware that Real Madrid were competing for Calafiori's signature even before they completed his signing in 2024 — a transfer the club viewed as a significant upgrade. Manager Mikel Arteta has credited the Italian with adding a new dimension to Arsenal's attacking play.
With Real Madrid's interest now re-emerging and Calafiori's own reported openness to a move to the Bernabéu, Arsenal face a difficult decision — particularly if an offer arrives that reflects his market value. The Gunners travel to Slavia Prague this week as their Champions League campaign continues.
