Real Madrid's £130m Bid for Julian Alvarez Rejected by Atletico Madrid

Real Madrid's pursuit of Julian Alvarez has hit an immediate wall after Atletico Madrid rejected a 150 million euro (£130m) offer for the Argentina striker.
Club president Florentino Perez had publicly pledged last week to sign a marquee "galactico" signing worth 150 million euros, should he win re-election as club president. Perez retained his position on Sunday and wasted no time following through on his promise.
Atletico, however, refused to entertain the approach, pointing to Alvarez's release clause of 500 million euros (£430m) — more than three times the amount Real tabled.
Real Madrid's statement
In an official statement, Real Madrid confirmed the sequence of events: "Following the meeting of the board of directors held today, it has made an offer of 150 million euros to Club Atletico de Madrid for the federative rights of the player Julian Alvarez."
Real added that Atletico had "expressed its gratitude for the proposal, made within the framework of the good relations between both clubs, and has rejected it, referring to the player's release clause."
Atletico Madrid did not issue an immediate response of their own.
Alvarez's strong debut season in Madrid
Alvarez, 26, only joined Atletico in 2024 from Manchester City in an £81.5m deal. The Argentina international — a 2022 World Cup winner — enjoyed an impressive first season at the club, scoring 20 goals in 49 appearances as Atletico finished fourth in La Liga and reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
With a release clause set at a prohibitive 500 million euros, any further pursuit from Real Madrid would require a dramatic shift in Atletico's stance — or a considerably larger offer.
