Real Madrid Sign Marc Cucurella From Chelsea on Six-Year Deal

2 hours ago·2 min

Real Madrid have completed the signing of defender Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, tying the Spain international to the club on a six-year contract through to 30 June 2032.

The LaLiga giants confirmed the deal in an official statement:

"Real Madrid C. F. and Chelsea FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Marc Cucurella, who will be linked to our club for the next six seasons, until June 30, 2032."

Chelsea will receive an initial fee of £47.5 million, with add-ons of £4.3 million that could take the total to £51.8 million. The London club originally paid Brighton £63 million for Cucurella four years ago.

A departure Cucurella sought

The 27-year-old made 163 appearances for Chelsea, collecting winners' medals in the Conference League and the Club World Cup. Despite that silverware, he was not regarded as one of the club's untouchable figures — a list that includes Cole Palmer and captain Reece James.

Cucurella had publicly criticised Chelsea's transfer policy and the decision to part ways with manager Enzo Maresca earlier this year. Multiple clubs circled the left-back, including a potential return to Barcelona, as well as interest from Atletico Madrid and Manchester City, but the former Barcelona man was set on joining Real Madrid.

He is currently representing Spain at the FIFA World Cup, where they open their Group H campaign against Cape Verde on Monday.

A busy summer for Mourinho's Madrid

The arrival of Cucurella adds to a remarkable summer of recruitment for incoming Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, who is set to officially begin his tenure at the club next month. Deals for Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, and Bernardo Silva have already been confirmed.

Back at Chelsea, Netherlands left-back Jorrel Hato — who joined from Ajax last summer for £37 million — is now the leading candidate to fill the vacancy left by Cucurella's departure, though the club may also look to the transfer market.

Fernandez situation separate

Cucurella's move is entirely unrelated to speculation linking Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez with Real Madrid. Fernandez stated in an April interview that he would welcome a life in Madrid, but Chelsea are unwilling to sell for below £120 million. The Argentina international arrived at Stamford Bridge from Benfica in 2023 for £106.8 million.
