Nestory Irankunda etched his name into Australian football history on Wednesday, becoming the youngest scorer ever for the Socceroos at a FIFA World Cup when he opened the scoring in a 2-0 victory over Turkey in Group D in Vancouver.
The 20-year-old Watford forward struck in the 27th minute, combining raw pace and power to carve out space before finishing with composure. It was the kind of goal that announced a player to the world — and the story behind it makes it all the more remarkable.
From a Tanzanian refugee camp to the world stage
Irankunda was born in 2006 in a refugee camp in Tanzania to Burundian parents who had fled their homeland during a civil war. As a young child, he relocated to Australia — the country he now represents on football's grandest stage.
He discovered football in Australia and worked his way through the ranks at Adelaide United in the A-League, recording 16 goals and eight assists for the senior side before earning a high-profile move to Bayern Munich in 2024.
Although he never made a first-team appearance in Germany, Irankunda trained alongside some of the finest players in the world, including England striker Harry Kane. Nevertheless, the absence of competitive minutes began to threaten his ambition of representing Australia at this World Cup.
A bold call to leave Bayern Munich
After a loan spell at Swiss club Grasshopper, Irankunda faced a defining decision in the summer of 2024. He chose to join Watford on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee — stepping away from one of the Bundesliga's biggest clubs in search of regular game time.
