Rodrigo Muniz Snatches Late Equaliser to Deny Newcastle at Craven Cottage

Fulham and Newcastle United shared the spoils at Craven Cottage on Saturday, drawing 1-1 in a result that denied Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle a morale-boosting victory. Jacob Murphy's superb strike gave the visitors the lead, before Rodrigo Muniz's unconventional finish earned the hosts a deserved point.

Murphy's stunner opens the scoring

Newcastle had reason to believe they were ahead before Murphy even struck — Dan Burn had nodded home from a corner in the first half, only for the goal to be ruled out after Yoane Wissa was penalised for pulling the shirt of Timothy Castagne. Harvey Barnes had also squandered a golden opportunity when played through on goal, aiming his effort too close to Bernd Leno.

Fulham dominated possession for long spells but created little of note, with a Josh King volley and a glancing header from their teenage forward the best they could manage as their recent struggles in front of goal persisted.

The turning point arrived when a loose pass from Sander Berge gifted Murphy space to run at Antonee Robinson. The Newcastle winger cut inside and unleashed a finish that left Leno with no chance — a moment of real quality that briefly appeared to settle the contest.

Muniz rescues a point

Jaissle's visible relief at the touchline proved short-lived. Within three minutes, Fulham levelled through Muniz, whose inventive flick from a deflected Cesar Palacios pass wrong-footed Lukas Hornicek — with Burn, unfortunate on the day, playing an inadvertent role in the equaliser.

It was Muniz's first Premier League goal in seven months, arriving at precisely the right moment for Fulham. The result also marked the first ever Premier League draw between these two sides in 19 meetings in the capital.

For Jaissle, the afternoon offered encouragement — Newcastle were markedly improved from their dispirited home defeat to Everton on Monday — but a point, rather than three, keeps the pressure on the German head coach heading into the week ahead.
