Ronaldo Breaks Silence on Portugal Walkout, Accuses Jorge Jesus of Broken Promises

54 minutes ago·2 min

Cristiano Ronaldo has ended his public silence over his sudden departure from the Portugal national team camp, releasing a lengthy statement through Reuters in which he accused head coach Jorge Jesus of breaking a personal agreement — and declared himself available to continue representing his country.

The 41-year-old Al Nassr forward confirmed that he and Jesus had reached a mutual arrangement before the Nations League fixture against Norway on September 27: Ronaldo would sit out both the Norway and Denmark matches to protect his fitness. Yet on the day of the Norway game, Jesus informed him that he would instead play for 30 minutes.

Ronaldo warmed up from half-time onward but was never introduced. "The manager had broken his word to me," he said in the statement. "It was the second time he had broken his word to me. I decided to leave the training camp without waiting for any further broken promises."

Contrasting accounts

Portugal went on to defeat Norway 2-1 that evening. Following the result, Jesus publicly denied that any such agreement had ever existed — though he left the door open for Ronaldo's eventual return to the squad.

Ronaldo took direct aim at the gap between Jesus's private words and his public statements, noting that "the coach's public remarks bore no resemblance to their private discussion."

Ronaldo pledges to accept punishment

Despite his grievances, Ronaldo struck a conciliatory tone toward his team-mates and the Portuguese public. He apologised to both groups for the manner of his departure and said he would accept whatever sanction the Portuguese Football Federation chose to impose on him.

"If I am physically well, playing for my club, with goals I hope, after serving the suspension that may be applied to me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team," he said.

No farewell yet — just competition

Ronaldo also pushed back against talk of a retirement send-off, insisting that his mindset remains focused on competing rather than celebrating a career's end. He promised fans — "and especially all Portuguese people" — that farewell matches would come in due course, but on his own terms.

In a striking personal passage, Ronaldo recalled remaining with the Portugal camp on the day he received news of his father's death, staying until after the match the following day. "I did for the country what I would never do for any club," he wrote.

Portugal's record goalscorer, with 146 goals in 234 appearances, Ronaldo closed by reflecting on his near 25-year international career. "Never, at any moment, have I interfered in any technical or tactical decision of any coach or national team manager," he said. "When they break their word to me, I feel that my place is not there."
