Wayne Rooney has described Ryan Gravenberch's dismissal as "naive and stupid," following Liverpool's heavy 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League.
Speaking on Match of the Day, Rooney and former Belgium international Toby Alderweireld debated whether Gravenberch deserved to be sent off after collecting two yellow cards during the match at Anfield.
The dismissal proved costly, with Liverpool ultimately falling to a comprehensive loss — their heaviest of the season — against a dominant Manchester City side.
Rooney's assessment was blunt: the Liverpool midfielder's double booking was avoidable, and the decision to put himself in that position showed a lack of awareness at a critical stage of the game.
Alderweireld also weighed in on the incident, adding further scrutiny to Gravenberch's conduct during the match, as both pundits questioned the judgment shown by the midfielder.
The defeat dealt a significant blow to Liverpool's Premier League campaign, with Manchester City demonstrating the kind of clinical performance that has defined their dominance of English football in recent seasons.
