Ruben Amorim Returns to Management with AC Milan Appointment

3 days ago·2 min

Ruben Amorim is back in football management, five months after his dismissal from Manchester United, having agreed a deal to become the new head coach of AC Milan.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano confirmed the appointment on Monday morning, posting on X that a verbal agreement had been reached on a contract running until June 2028, with an option to extend through June 2029. Amorim has accepted all conditions and is set to put pen to paper this week.

Milan's next chapter

AC Milan turned to Amorim after parting ways with Massimiliano Allegri, whose tenure ended with a fifth-place finish in Serie A — a result the club described as "an unequivocal failure." The appointment signals the start of a new era at the San Siro.

The 47-year-old Portuguese coach now faces the challenge of restoring Milan to the summit of Italian football. The Rossoneri have not lifted the Serie A title since the 2021/22 season, during which time fierce city rivals Inter have claimed both their 20th and 21st league championships.

A chance at redemption

Amorim's time at Manchester United proved difficult. Despite guiding the club to the UEFA Europa League final in the 2024/25 season, he was unable to meet the broader expectations of the board and supporters. His win rate at Old Trafford dropped to 39.7 percent — a stark contrast to the 71.3 percent he maintained during his trophy-laden spell at Sporting Lisbon.

Several other coaches had been linked with the Milan vacancy before Amorim's appointment was confirmed. Mauricio Pochettino, who led the United States to a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay at the World Cup at the weekend, had been among the names mentioned. Former Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner — who departed at the end of the season following his side's UEFA Conference League triumph — was also considered, as was Ralf Rangnick, another former Manchester United head coach.

With a proven record of building winning teams in Portugal, Amorim will be eager to rediscover that form and deliver the success AC Milan are demanding.
