Russia Demolish Namibia 6-0 to Send Warning to Super Eagles

1 hour ago·2 min

Russia delivered a commanding 6-0 victory over Namibia on Saturday, issuing a stern warning to Nigeria's Super Eagles ahead of their international friendly on Tuesday, October 6.

The Ekaterinburg Arena hosted a one-sided affair as Russia scored five goals in the second half to dismantle the Brave Warriors. Lechi Sadulaev opened the scoring in the 37th minute, and the floodgates opened after the break — Danil Prutsev (54'), Konstantin Tyukavin (65'), Maksim Glushenkov (84'), Maksim Petrov (pen 87'), and a late own goal from Namibian goalkeeper Kamaijanda Ndisiro (90+2') completing the rout.

Russia dominated the game with 24 shots — 14 on target — while Namibia failed to register a single attempt on goal.

Russia's resurgent form

The result continues an impressive run for Russia, who have won their last four matches, scoring 14 goals without conceding a defeat in that stretch. Their only loss in recent memory came on May 28, 2026, when Egypt edged them 1-0.

Banned by FIFA since 2022, Russia have been restricted to international friendlies, yet Saturday's demolition job signals they remain a formidable outfit on the pitch.

Super Eagles head to Nizhny Novgorod

Nigeria face Russia at the 44,000-capacity Nizhny Novgorod Stadium — a venue that hosted matches during the 2018 FIFA World Cup — in what will be their second meeting in 16 months. The two sides drew 1-1 in Moscow in June 2025, with Semi Ajayi's own goal cancelled out by a Tolu Arokodare strike.

Manager Eric Chelle travels to Russia with an experimental 24-man squad, with several key players absent. Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, and Samuel Chukwueze have all been left out, while captain Wilfred Ndidi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, and Akpe Victory have withdrawn from the squad. John Otomewo of Reims and Vince Osuji of Tromso have been called up as replacements.

Moses Simon, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Akor Adams are expected to lead the attacking line for a largely youthful group that includes two players from the Nigeria Premier Football League.

A testing moment for Nigeria

The Super Eagles arrive in uncertain form after a turbulent Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying window — defeating Madagascar 2-1 before suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau. Tuesday's clash against an in-form Russia side will test the depth and resilience of Chelle's rebuilding project.
