Sarr Equals Ahmed Musa's World Cup Brace Feat Despite Senegal's Loss to Norway

2 hours ago·2 min

Ismaila Sarr etched his name into World Cup history with a brace against Norway, but his heroics were not enough to spare Senegal from a 3-2 defeat in their Group I clash at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

In doing so, Sarr became the first African player to score two goals against a European nation at a World Cup since Ahmed Musa achieved the feat for Nigeria against Iceland on June 22, 2018 — a landmark recorded by football statistics platform Stats Foot.

Sarr also joined an exclusive Senegalese club. He is only the third player to net a brace for Senegal at the World Cup, following the late Papa Bouba Diop — who scored twice against Uruguay on June 11, 2002 — and Henri Camara, who did the same against Sweden on June 16, 2002.

How the match unfolded

Senegal arrived at this fixture in desperate need of a response after conceding a 3-1 opening defeat to France. Things went from bad to worse when Marcus Pedersen gave Norway the lead on 43'.

Erling Haaland extended that advantage three minutes into the second half, putting Norway firmly in control at 2-0. Sarr then reduced the deficit on 53', injecting renewed hope into the Teranga Lions' campaign.

Haaland struck again just five minutes later, restoring Norway's two-goal cushion. Sarr refused to give up, pulling another goal back in stoppage time to make it 3-2, but it proved too little, too late for Senegal.

The result leaves Senegal with two defeats from two games in Group I at the 2026 World Cup, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and places their tournament progression in serious jeopardy.
