Seedorf Reveals Why He Chose Inter Milan Over Manchester United
Clarence Seedorf has lifted the lid on one of football's great what-ifs — explaining precisely why he rejected a move to Manchester United at the height of his powers and chose Inter Milan instead.
Speaking to Kobbie Mainoo on Amazon Prime Video Sport's YouTube channel, the 50-year-old Dutch legend said Sir Alex Ferguson was actively pursuing him after his departure from Real Madrid around the turn of the millennium. Yet a phone call from Marcello Lippi changed everything.
Ronaldo R9, Vieri, and the Italian sun
"He called me. He said, 'Uh, Clarence, you want to come and play behind Ronaldo R9 and Christian Vieri?'" Seedorf recalled. "I said, 'Okay, let me just take my bags. I'm coming.'"
The prospect of linking up with two of the most devastating strikers of that era was simply too compelling to refuse. Seedorf also pointed to his familiarity with Italian football and lifestyle as a factor, adding: "Italy was a bit more familiar. Probably was the reason why I chose to go there as well."
He told Mainoo he had "wanted to come here for a long time" and was "supposed to even play here" — a candid admission of just how close Old Trafford came to landing one of the finest midfielders of his generation.
A career defined by trophies
By the time Seedorf left Real Madrid, he had made 159 appearances for the club, scoring 20 goals and registering 35 assists. His trophy cabinet at the Bernabeu included the La Liga title, two domestic cups, and the UEFA Champions League.
The move to Inter Milan, which cost approximately £20 million, did not yield any silverware — but Seedorf would more than make up for it across the city at AC Milan.
Over a decade at the San Siro, he made 432 appearances, scored 62 goals, contributed 67 assists, and won nine trophies. Among them were two UEFA Champions League titles, two UEFA Super Cups, two Serie A titles, and three domestic cups — a haul that cemented his status as one of the club's all-time greats.
Seedorf rounded off his playing career at Botafogo in Brazil, hanging up his boots in 2014 after winning the league title with the Rio de Janeiro club.
