Senegal Heartbreak as Belgium Stage Stunning Late Comeback to Win 3-2

2 hours ago·3 min

Senegal's 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a devastating end in Seattle on Wednesday as Belgium completed a stunning late comeback to win 3-2 after extra time — a result that will linger painfully in the memory of African football fans.

Pape Thiaw's side were 2-0 ahead with just five minutes of normal time remaining, apparently bound for the last 16. Instead, two goals in three minutes dragged Belgium level, and a late Youri Tielemans penalty in extra time completed one of the most dramatic reversals of the tournament.

Senegal's bright start

The Lions of Teranga were the sharper team from the first whistle, pressing Belgium high and finding space down both flanks through Sadio Mané and Iliman Ndiaye.

Thibaut Courtois was tested early, pushing a deflected cross from Ismail Jakobs into the path of Ismaïla Sarr, who fell as he finished and watched the ball roll against the post before his rebound attempt went wide.

The warning went unheeded. Moments later, Mané delivered a precise inswinging cross; Sarr rose to meet it and struck the woodwork again, but Habib Diarra reacted first to turn in the rebound and give Senegal a deserved lead.

Sarr doubles the advantage

Belgium attempted to respond but found Senegal's defensive shape difficult to break down. Thiaw's side defended with discipline and punished every space the Belgians offered.

Early in the second half, Moussa Niakhaté played a precise long pass into the channel, and Sarr brought it down brilliantly on his chest before rounding the Belgian defence and firing past Courtois in the 51st minute to make it 2-0.

Senegal were in complete control. They had been quicker, more purposeful, and more threatening throughout — and a two-goal cushion with less than 40 minutes left felt more than sufficient.

Belgium's late escape

Knockout football is unforgiving, and Senegal paid the price for failing to close out the match. Belgium introduced fresh legs and began pressing relentlessly as the clock ticked down.

Substitutes Thomas Meunier and Romelu Lukaku combined in the 86th minute to hand Belgium a lifeline, with Lukaku reducing the deficit. Three minutes later, Leandro Trossard delivered a dangerous cross that Tielemans headed home to make it 2-2 — and suddenly Senegal's dominant performance counted for nothing.

Extra-time agony

The Lions of Teranga held on into extra time, but the momentum had shifted irreversibly. As the match appeared to be heading toward a penalty shootout, Tielemans went down in the box. A VAR review confirmed the penalty, and he stepped up to score deep into added time of extra time — completing one of the most extraordinary reversals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

It was a cruel conclusion for Senegal, who had controlled large portions of the match. Belgium, meanwhile, will remain in Seattle for a round-of-16 tie against either hosts USA or Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Thiaw accepts painful defeat

Senegal had arrived at this stage having recovered from a difficult group phase, defeating Iraq 5-0 to advance as one of the best third-placed sides. They had put themselves in a position to eliminate one of Europe's most seasoned squads — and ultimately could not hold on when composure was needed most.

After the final whistle, Thiaw did not shy away from the pain of the defeat but praised his players' commitment.
