Jonjo Shelvey grew up watching a DVD about Steven Gerrard's career the night before youth matches, using it as fuel to push himself further. Years later, the two men would share a dressing room — and a postcode.

Shelvey joined Liverpool in 2010, stepping into a squad that already contained the player he had idolised since childhood. Gerrard was, by that point, a UEFA Champions League winner, a two-time FA Cup holder, and had accumulated 65 England caps.
