Salisu Yusuf is facing growing scrutiny as technical adviser of Shooting Stars after the Ibadan club endured another underwhelming result in the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season.

The Oluyole Warriors could only draw 0-0 with Kano Pillars in a rescheduled Matchday 3 fixture at Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan on Wednesday — a result that extended a deeply troubling run of form.

A run of form to forget

Shooting Stars have managed just one win from their last seven league outings, with that solitary victory accompanied by two draws and four defeats. The stalemate against Kano Pillars did nothing to arrest the slide.

Their domestic struggles are compounded by an early exit from the CAF Confederation Cup. Shooting Stars fell in the first preliminary round to Tunisian club CS Sfaxien, winning the first leg 1-0 at their temporary home ground in Abeokuta before succumbing 2-0 in the return fixture, surrendering their advantage on aggregate.

A sharp contrast to last season

The difficult opening to 2026/27 stands in stark contrast to Shooting Stars' strong finish to the previous campaign. The Oluyole Warriors secured a third-place finish in the 2025/26 season — enough to earn a continental berth for the first time in over two decades.

Yusuf stepped into the role after Nurudeen Aweroro was controversially dismissed by the club just weeks before the new season kicked off. The experienced tactician inherited a squad with continental ambitions, but results so far have failed to match expectations.

Fan frustration boils over

Following Wednesday's goalless stalemate, sections of the Shooting Stars support base openly called for Yusuf's removal and demanded the reinstatement of Aweroro. The public pressure after just a handful of competitive matches underlines how quickly sentiment has shifted.

Yusuf will be desperate to turn things around when Shooting Stars travel to take on Kun Khalifat FC in a Matchday 8 encounter this weekend.
