Sky Sports and Guinness Bring Live Subtitles and Descriptive Audio to Premier League Coverage

52 minutes ago·2 min

Sky Sports and Guinness have unveiled a landmark accessibility initiative across their Premier League coverage, bringing Live Subtitles to every front-channel match and Live Descriptive Audio Commentary to selected fixtures throughout the season, beginning October 10.

A new standard for accessible football broadcasting

The rollout represents the most ambitious accessibility upgrade ever undertaken across Sky Sports platforms. Developed to ensure that blind, partially sighted, and hard-of-hearing supporters can enjoy live football alongside family and friends, the initiative has been built with real fans in mind from the outset.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) played a central role in shaping the Live Descriptive Audio Commentary service, providing guidance alongside accessibility specialists and representative users to ensure the final product meets the genuine needs of the communities it serves.

What Live Descriptive Audio Commentary offers

Live Descriptive Audio Commentary goes significantly further than traditional Audio Description. Rather than offering occasional explanatory inserts, the service delivers a continuous running account of the action — much closer in style to classic radio commentary — covering the movement of play, key moments, the atmosphere inside the stadium, and the broader on-pitch drama as it unfolds.

The service launches on October 10 and 11, beginning with Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool vs Manchester City, two of the most high-profile Premier League fixtures of the early season.

Live Subtitles on every front-channel match

Live Subtitles will be available across all front-channel Premier League matches on Sky Sports, allowing deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers to follow live commentary, pitch-side analysis, and on-screen dialogue in real time. Together, the two services mark the most significant step forward Sky Sports has taken in making live football genuinely accessible to a wider audience.

How to activate the services

Both services are integrated directly into the viewing experience. Live Descriptive Audio Commentary can be enabled via Sky Voice Control or by navigating to Settings, then Accessibility, and selecting the service from the on-screen options menu during the match. Live Subtitles can be switched on through the on-screen options menu or via Settings and then Accessibility on the relevant device.

The services are available across Sky+, Sky Q, Sky Glass, Sky Stream, NOW, and Sky Sports on Virgin Media. Fans can confirm whether Descriptive Audio Commentary is available for a specific match by checking the TV Guide — the AD logo will appear alongside the programme title, accompanied by a short audio cue.

A shared commitment to inclusion

The initiative extends Guinness' existing Premier League sponsorship with Sky Sports into the accessibility space, reflecting a joint ambition to ensure live football remains a shared experience — one that as many supporters as possible can enjoy, regardless of disability or hearing ability.
