Aston Villa's pursuit of Southampton defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis has hit an early obstacle, with the south-coast club rejecting a bid of approximately £18m plus add-ons for the England international.

Southampton are holding firm at around £25m for Harwood-Bellis, a significant gap that the two clubs must bridge if a deal is to be struck. Villa are in the market for defensive reinforcements as Ezri Konsa prepares to depart for Arsenal in a deal worth more than £50m.

Harwood-Bellis's background

Harwood-Bellis, a product of the Manchester City academy who never made a first-team appearance for the club, joined Southampton in 2023 on an initial loan arrangement before making the move permanent. He has earned one cap for England, coming in a 2024 UEFA Nations League fixture against Republic of Ireland.

Southampton's summer, meanwhile, has been defined by off-field drama. The club finished fourth in the Championship last season, only to have their play-off campaign ended by the Spygate scandal.

Villa's busy transfer window
