Sunderland have secured Austria international Kevin Danso on a loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur that runs until the end of the season, with the move costing the Black Cats £2.5m upfront.

The agreement includes a clause that would make the transfer permanent next summer for £22.5m — but only if Regis Le Bris' side retain their Premier League status.

Danso, 27, expressed his enthusiasm upon arriving at the club.

"I'm really happy to be here and I can't wait to get started. Sunderland is a big club with huge ambition, and I'm excited to be part of what we're building this season."

The defender joined Tottenham from RC Lens in January 2025 and made 52 appearances for the north London club. His arrival at the Stadium of Light strengthens Sunderland's defensive options as they prepare for their first European campaign since 1973.

Spurs close in on Adarabioyo as replacement

Danso's departure from Spurs coincides with Roberto de Zerbi's side moving to bring in Chelsea centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo as his replacement. A bid for the 28-year-old was accepted by Chelsea on Monday night.

Adarabioyo came through Manchester City's academy at the Etihad before joining Fulham on a permanent basis in 2020. He then moved to Stamford Bridge in 2024 after his Fulham contract expired.

Since linking up with Chelsea, Adarabioyo has racked up more than 70 appearances for the Blues across all competitions and has collected two major honours — the Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Mudryk move also in the works

Tottenham are also pressing to finalise a deal for Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk ahead of Tuesday night's transfer deadline, adding further movement to a busy evening of business between the two clubs.
