Sunderland Reject Chelsea's £8 Million Bid for Granit Xhaka, Dealing Xabi Alonso an Early Blow

Xabi Alonso's tenure as Chelsea manager has barely begun, yet the former Bayer Leverkusen coach has already suffered a significant transfer setback after Sunderland emphatically rejected the club's opening bid for midfielder Granit Xhaka.
Chelsea's £8 million offer dismissed as disrespectful
Chelsea submitted an initial offer of £8 million for the Switzerland international, but Sunderland swiftly rebuffed the approach, reportedly viewing the bid as disrespectful given that Xhaka remains under contract at the Stadium of Light until summer 2028. The rejection has, in effect, ended Chelsea's pursuit of the 33-year-old.
According to The Athletic, Xhaka has since reaffirmed his commitment to Sunderland, pledging to remain at the club and consolidating his standing as a key figure in their setup.
Alonso's vision for Chelsea's squad
Alonso was brought to Stamford Bridge in an elevated role — as manager rather than head coach — granting him greater authority over transfer decisions than his predecessors enjoyed under owner BlueCo's regime. That appointment marked a shift away from the club's post-2022 philosophy of accumulating young talents on long contracts, moving instead toward a more targeted approach to squad building.
Xhaka had been identified as a natural fit for Alonso's system. The pair worked together at Bayer Leverkusen during the historic 2023-24 season in which they went unbeaten across the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal, claiming the club's first-ever German league title. Xhaka was central to that remarkable campaign.
The Switzerland captain's return to England with Sunderland last summer proved no less impactful. He helped the Black Cats secure Europa League qualification — a striking achievement for a club of their size — and firmly re-established himself as one of the Premier League's most influential midfielders.
Although Xhaka was reportedly open to a reunion with Alonso, his decision to honour his contract at the Stadium of Light leaves Chelsea's new boss needing to look elsewhere as he attempts to build a squad capable of matching the standards he set at the BayArena.
Alonso has already made one addition to Chelsea's ranks, with Italy international Marco Palestra arriving as part of the club's early summer activity — a window in which the new manager has been visibly involved from the outset.
