Super Eagles Must Sweep Tanzania Double-Header to Secure AFCON 2027 Spot

1 hour ago·2 min

Nigeria enter the November international window under pressure after their shock defeat to Guinea-Bissau in Group L of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Eric Chelle's side must now collect maximum points across two fixtures against Tanzania to keep their qualification hopes firmly on track.

The Super Eagles host the Taifa Stars first at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on 13 November, before travelling to Dar es Salaam for the return leg on 17 November. With Tanzania sitting just two points behind Nigeria in Group L, nothing less than back-to-back victories will do.

Chukwueze ruled out, Usor and Tella in contention

Chelle faces an immediate selection headache. Samuel Chukwueze has been ruled out of both matches with a persistent hip injury, removing one of the Super Eagles' most dangerous attacking outlets on the right flank.

Moses Usor of LASK is well-placed to fill that void. The forward announced himself on the international stage by scoring the winning goal on his debut against Madagascar and is expected to feature prominently in both ties. Bayer Leverkusen's Nathan Tella offers Chelle another viable option in that department.

Victor Osimhen, who overcame a fitness scare at club level, is set to lead the attack. Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi are both expected to anchor the midfield as they normally do.

Tanzania's threat should not be underestimated

Tanzania manager Miguel Gamondi is likely to set his side up in a compact, defensive shape at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, looking to frustrate the Super Eagles and rely on the experience of striker Mbwana Samatta to threaten on the counter-attack.

The scheduling of the double-header adds another layer of complexity — the two matches are fewer than 100 hours apart, with both squads required to make cross-continental journeys in between. Fatigue and sharpness could prove decisive, particularly in the second leg in Dar es Salaam.

What's at stake for Nigeria

Six points from these two games would effectively seal Nigeria's place at AFCON 2027, to be hosted in Morocco. Anything less, and the Super Eagles' path to the tournament becomes significantly more complicated — and the debate around Chelle's side considerably more anxious.
