Swansea City Sign Canada's Stephen Eustaquio from Porto for £3.4 Million

Swansea City have bolstered their midfield by securing the signature of Canada international Stephen Eustaquio from Porto for an undisclosed fee understood to be around £3.4 million. The 29-year-old has signed a two-year deal with an option to extend for an additional 12 months at the Championship club.
A significant coup for the Swans
Eustaquio brings considerable experience to Swansea, having featured in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and FIFA Club World Cup during his time with Porto. He joined the Portuguese giants in 2022 and contributed to two league title triumphs before his arrival in Wales.
Swansea head coach Vitor Matos was quick to highlight the new signing's qualities. "Stephen is an experienced leader who possesses great technical quality and game understanding," Matos said. "His qualities will complement the options we already have available to us in midfield, and he is an incredible professional."
Matos added: "He is going to be an important player for us, on and off the pitch, and I am sure our fans are going to enjoy watching him play for Swansea City."
Canada's trusted leader
Eustaquio is Canada's regular vice-captain and took the armband for much of this year's FIFA World Cup following injury concerns surrounding Alphonso Davies. The 61-cap midfielder made a lasting impression at the tournament, scoring a late winner — his fifth international goal — as Canada defeated South Africa in the round of 32.
Born in Canada to Portuguese parents, Eustaquio moved to Portugal as a child and represented Portugal at under-21 level before ultimately committing to Canada. His club career began with Torrense, before spells at Leixoes, Chaves, Cruz Azul in Mexico, and Pacos Ferreira, eventually leading him to Porto in 2022.
Earlier this month, he appeared as a substitute in Porto's Primeira Liga fixture against Rio Ave, and had made 12 appearances in the first half of last season before joining Los Angeles FC on loan.
Swansea's summer recruitment drive
The signing addresses a clear need in the Swansea engine room following the sale of Ethan Galbraith to Stoke and the departure of Malick Yalcouye, whose loan from Brighton came to an end. Eustaquio becomes the club's sixth permanent addition of the summer, joining Stephen Welsh, Elijah Just, Joseph Opoku, Moussa Yeo, and Ross Stewart. Left-back Tiago Parente has also arrived on loan, though Swansea are still seeking to reinforce their central defence ahead of Tuesday's transfer deadline.
