Sweden vs Tunisia: World Cup 2026 Group F Preview and How to Watch

2 hours ago·3 min

Sweden and Tunisia kick off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaigns in what could prove a decisive Group F encounter, with both sides knowing the result of this opening fixture will shape their path through the tournament.

Everything on the line from minute one

With the expanded 48-team format sending eight of the best third-placed finishers into the knockout rounds, a positive result in the first match carries enormous weight. A draw would leave Sweden and Tunisia both needing wins against Japan and the Netherlands to secure their progress; a victory, meanwhile, would place the winner within touching distance of qualification.

Tunisia arrived at this stage in dominant fashion, winning nine of their ten African qualifying matches and finishing 13 points clear at the top of their group. It was a campaign that underlined their status as one of the continent's most consistent World Cup sides.

Sweden's route was far more turbulent. They claimed just two points in standard qualification before earning a Nations League play-off berth — a reprieve they took full advantage of under manager Graham Potter. Viktor Gyokeres was the hero of their play-off final against Poland, converting a late winner two minutes from the end. Ukraine were also eliminated along the way.

Neither side in ideal form

Ahead of the Group F opener at Estadio BBVA, form concerns cloud both camps. Tunisia, under Sabri Lamouchi, lost both of their June friendlies without finding the net — conceding five goals against Belgium in their final warm-up fixture.

Sweden, for their part, suffered a 3-1 defeat to Norway in Oslo before drawing with Greece at home. The squad have since settled into their World Cup base in Frisco, Texas, looking to sharpen up before their tournament begins.

The two sides have not met competitively in 23 years. Across four previous friendly encounters, neither team has ever scored more than one goal against the other, and Tunisia's sole win came in the most recent of those meetings.

Tunisia chasing a historic milestone

For the Eagles of Carthage, Group F represents a rare opportunity to reach the knockout rounds of the World Cup for the first time in their history. Their opponents Sweden, by contrast, have not failed to emerge from the group stage since 1990 — though they return to the world stage this summer having missed the previous edition entirely.
