Tanzania's Taifa Stars Head to Uyo for AFCON 2027 Qualifier Against Super Eagles

1 hour ago·1 min

Tanzania's Taifa Stars are set to travel to Uyo on Sunday ahead of their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying clash with Nigeria's Super Eagles, with head coach Miguel Gamondi keen to make full use of the early arrival for preparations.

The trip comes as Gamondi finalises a 24-man squad for a crucial double-header against Nigeria. Yanga FC and Azam FC — both Tanzanian league champions — lead the domestic contingent with five players each, while Kagera Sugar and Singida Black Stars each contribute one player.

Foreign-based stars in the mix

Among the overseas selections, Novatus Miroshi features from Turkish Super Lig outfit Goztepe, Cyprian Kachewele arrives from Ukrainian side Kryvbas, and Bernard Kamongo makes the squad from Major League Soccer club FC Dallas.

A campaign in need of momentum

The Taifa Stars enter this fixture desperate to turn their qualifying fortunes around. Tanzania opened their Group campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau, then drew 1-1 with Madagascar in Matchday Two — leaving them with just one point from their opening two outings.

Gamondi's side face Nigeria in their Matchday Three fixture at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, 13 November. The two nations will then meet again four days later in the return leg, with Tanzania hosting at Dar es Salaam.

For the Super Eagles, the back-to-back fixtures represent an opportunity to strengthen their grip on the group and edge closer to qualification for the tournament, which Nigeria will co-host in 2027.
