Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has spoken candidly about the heartbreak of watching his side surrender a 2-0 advantage against Belgium in their Round of 32 clash at the FIFA World Cup 2026, admitting the result is difficult to accept.
The Teranga Lions appeared to be cruising into the last 16 after goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr, but a dramatic late Belgian comeback ended their tournament.
How Senegal let the lead slip
Diarra opened the scoring 25 minutes in, tapping home from close range after Sarr's header had rattled the woodwork. Senegal doubled their lead after half-time through Sarr, who controlled a precise long ball from centre-back Moussa Niakhate with his chest, rounded the Belgium defenders, and beat Thibaut Courtois with a composed finish.
The match appeared to be heading Senegal's way until Belgium launched a frantic five-minute assault. Substitute Romelu Lukaku pulled one back, before captain Youri Tielemans scored twice in the closing stages to complete a stunning 3-2 comeback for Rudi Garcia's side.
Belgium advance to the Round of 16, where they will face co-hosts United States of America.
Thiaw's reaction
Speaking after the final whistle, Thiaw did not hide his anguish over the manner of the defeat.
