Tori Penso to Referee Czechia vs South Africa in Historic Men's World Cup Debut

2 hours ago·2 min

With both Czechia and South Africa suffering defeats in their opening Group A fixtures at FIFA World Cup 2026, their second encounter carries enormous weight — a loss for either side would put their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds in serious jeopardy.

The two nations meet at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, where a victory would hand the winning team control of their own destiny heading into the final group game. For South Africa, who conceded two red cards against Mexico in matchday one, discipline will be as important as quality on the ball.

A historic appointment between the posts

The Czechia vs South Africa match will be officiated by Tori Penso, a 39-year-old referee from Florida who makes history as the first female American referee to take charge of a men's World Cup match.

Penso has risen rapidly since being added to the FIFA list in 2021. Her most prominent previous appointment came at the 2023 Women's World Cup final in Sydney, where she oversaw Spain's victory over England — a stage that announced her as one of the top officials in the global game.

She also broke ground in club football, becoming the first full-time female referee in Major League Soccer, where she has worked for the past six years. The 2026 MLS season is currently on hiatus for the World Cup, and across nine matches this season Penso has yet to show a red card, has awarded one penalty, and has averaged just over four yellow cards per game.

An all-American crew — with one exception

Penso will be joined by assistant referees Kathryn Nesbitt and Brooke Mayo, completing an all-female, all-American officiating trio on the touchlines. New Zealand's Campbell-Kirk Kawana-Waugh will serve as the fourth official, while VAR duties will be handled by Tatiana Guzman of Nicaragua.

Crucially, Penso has no previous experience refereeing either Czechia or South Africa in men's or women's football, meaning both teams approach this fixture on equal footing with the official. Bafana Bafana, in particular, will be hoping for a calmer afternoon than their opening match against Mexico provided.
