Tottenham Eye West Ham's Fernandes After Tonali Bid Fails

2 hours ago·2 min

Tottenham Hotspur have shifted their attention to West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes after a £80 million bid for Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali was turned down last week.

Fernandes, 21, has emerged as a primary transfer target for Spurs, with talks between the two clubs understood to be progressing positively. Tottenham are optimistic that a deal can be struck, though West Ham are believed to be holding out for around £80 million for the Portugal international.

The young midfielder has also attracted interest from Manchester United and Paris St-Germain, meaning Tottenham face competition if they are to secure his signature this summer.

Tonali pursuit ends

Spurs head coach Roberto de Zerbi had been a keen admirer of Tonali — a fellow Italian — and the club explored the financial viability of a move. However, Newcastle United rejected the approach, and Tonali remains under contract at St. James' Park for another four years.

The 26-year-old signed a new deal at Newcastle as a show of loyalty following a 10-month ban he served for breaching the Football Association's betting rules.

A busy summer at Spurs

Despite the setback, Tottenham have been among the most active clubs in the transfer market this summer, already completing four signings ahead of the new season.

On Wednesday, the north London club confirmed the arrival of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on a free transfer, with the deal set to become official once his contract with Burnley expires on 1 July. The 37-year-old Slovakian international adds further depth between the posts.

Dubravka joins defenders Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson — both arriving on free transfers from Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively — and Netherlands centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, who cost Tottenham £52 million from Brighton & Hove Albion.
