Trent Alexander-Arnold's Liverpool Return Gathers Momentum as Real Madrid Future Remains in Doubt

A possible return to Liverpool for Trent Alexander-Arnold is gaining traction, with fresh reports linking the England international with a move back to Anfield less than two seasons after he left for Real Madrid.
Alexander-Arnold departed Liverpool on a free transfer following more than 350 appearances for the club, ending his time on Merseyside having won two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2019. Despite his decorated career at Liverpool, he has struggled to cement himself as a key figure at Real Madrid since making the switch.
A replacement route opening up
Spanish radio station Cadena SER reports that Tottenham Hotspur right-back Pedro Porro is considering his future amid interest from Barcelona. However, journalist Pacojo Delgado has suggested that Porro may prefer a move to Real Madrid — a scenario that could accelerate Alexander-Arnold's exit from the Bernabeu.
Delgado stated: "If Real Madrid comes calling, knowing that Trent Alexander-Arnold isn't convincing at full-back, there might be an option." Real Madrid had Porro on their radar before signing Denzel Dumfries over the summer to compete with Alexander-Arnold for the right-back role.
TEAMtalk has reported that Liverpool would welcome the chance to re-sign their former No.66, should the opportunity arise. It remains to be seen whether the club's hierarchy would be willing to move on any lingering ill-feeling from his departure.
A complicated farewell
Alexander-Arnold, now 28, was a beloved figure at Anfield — one of the players who defined a golden era under manager Jurgen Klopp and who helped reshape modern thinking about the right-back role. His ability to dictate play from deep made him one of the finest full-backs in the world during his peak years.
Yet his exit on a free transfer drew frustration from some supporters, who felt Liverpool were denied a fair fee for one of their most prized academy products. That frustration turned to audible discontent when he returned to Anfield with Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League last season.
Arsenal and Manchester City have also been linked with the full-back, with Arsenal considered a credible option following uncertainty around right-back Ben White, who came close to leaving last summer.
No imminent sale from Madrid
Despite the speculation, FourFourTwo understands that Real Madrid have no current plans to sell Alexander-Arnold in the January transfer window. According to Transfermarkt, the full-back carries a market value of €60 million.
Any move is therefore likely to take shape in the summer, when all interested parties — Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Alexander-Arnold himself — will need to make a decision about his next chapter.
