Tuchel Makes Bold Call as England Name Lineup Against Norway

1 hour ago·2 min

England manager Thomas Tuchel has named what promises to be a contentious starting lineup for the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final against Norway, with several selection calls likely to divide fans.

Konsa at right-back as Tuchel shuffles his defence

The right-back position has been a persistent headache throughout England's tournament run. Reece James remains sidelined and is unable to start, while Djed Spence — who has deputised in James's absence — picked up an injury ahead of the Round of 16 victory over Mexico and was restricted to a substitute appearance in that 3-2 win.

Rather than turning to Spence or the imposing Dan Burn, Tuchel has opted to shift Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa from central defence to right-back. John Stones steps into the heart of the back line alongside Marc Guehi to fill the gap left by Konsa's positional switch.

Stones and Guehi face Haaland challenge

Both Stones and Guehi are club teammates of Norway striker Erling Haaland at Manchester City and Arsenal respectively — and they will need every advantage that familiarity can offer. Haaland arrives at this stage of the tournament with seven goals to his name, and he will be hunting the Golden Boot while driving Norway deeper into the competition.

Tuchel has chosen to keep Burn on the bench as an impact substitute, resisting any temptation to deploy the 6ft 7in centre-half as a physical deterrent to Haaland from the outset.

Madueke preferred to Saka on the right wing

Perhaps the most eyebrow-raising selection is the inclusion of Arsenal winger Noni Madueke in the starting eleven on the right-hand side of attack. Madueke sat out the Mexico fixture entirely as an unused substitute, yet Tuchel has moved ahead of him over his Arsenal clubmate Bukayo Saka.

It is a call that will unsettle a portion of the England fanbase, but it is consistent with Tuchel's reputation for making bold, decisive choices at the highest stakes.

England's path to the quarter-finals

England have navigated their way through the tournament with wins over Croatia, Panama, DR Congo, and Mexico. Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane have been central to that progress, supplying the quality and leadership England needed through each round.

Jarell Quansah, who missed the DR Congo fixture with an ankle injury, was then sent off following a VAR review in the Mexico win and has been handed a two-match ban. He will play no part against Norway, with his only possible remaining appearance coming in the final — should England go that far.

Expected England XI: Pickford (GK); Konsa, Stones, Guehi, O'Reilly; Rice, Anderson, Bellingham; Gordon, Madueke, Kane
